Why book? This simple but excellent resort represents a welcome shift in the Catskills hospitality landscape that reflects many of the cultural changes in the big city to the south over the last several decades. Set the scene A quiet country road takes you up a gentle hill where you're greeted by a small check-in building; an elegant shop selling gifts, sundries, and comestibles; and the barn-like, cedar-clad restaurant, which does elevated comfort food with some Italian and Middle Eastern flourishes. Beyond is a valley that resembles a painting by the hotel’s namesake, the Hudson River School artist George Inness. Generous duplex cabins line a gravel road leading to an adorable old farmhouse with more rooms and common spaces. Also on the 220 acres is a nine-hole golf course, tennis courts, a pool, and walking trails. The rooms Said to be influenced by Dutch vernacular architecture, the gable-roofed duplex cabins, which can be booked separately or together, are a master class in clean lines and spartan simplicity. Inside, the feeling is of Scandinavian minimalism and Shaker austerity. There are simple wood stoves, well-equipped kitchenettes, and plenty of space, with French doors opening onto small porches perfect for gazing out at the valley. Inside the 12-room farmhouse, which is where breakfast is also served, the feeling is more of classic, well-appointed Americana. Food and drink At the on-site restaurant, executive chef Gabriel Salazar leads the charge with a menu celebrating the best of what’s local and seasonal. Dishes range from zingy tuna crudo to umami mushroom risotto. There are some excellent farm-to-table entrées, too: a good hanger steak, chicken with jus, and a perfectly cooked cheeseburger; many of the ingredients come from the three-acre farm just below. Come morning, the restaurant’s generous porch is the ideal spot to ease into the day with coffee and a bite for breakfast. The neighborhood/area Located outside the town of Accord, Inness is in a classic part of the Catskills, just a few miles west of the Hudson River, that mixes farmland, rugged nature, and cute hippie towns. The legendary Mohonk Mountain House is minutes away; Kingston, with its great dining and shopping options, is about a half hour away, and Woodstock lies just a little further north. There are terrific hiking and cycling options in the immediate vicinity, and in the winter there are modest ski slopes not far away. Worth it? Yes—and don’t assume it’s a spring-to-fall destination. Inness’s design and location also make it an incredibly cozy, beautiful, and appealing option when it is very cold out too. |

A Cozy Catskills Tree House Near Phoenicia Diner If you’re looking for an escape from NYC, do what commerce director Madison Flager did last fall and book this Catskills tree house Airbnb just a few minutes' drive from the beloved Phoenicia Diner. The well-decorated two-bedroom home fits up to four comfortably, and the rooms are fairly equally sized—though one has a wall of windows overlooking the woods surrounding the house, so you might have to fight your friends and family members for it. Flager notes the cabin would make a lovely spot for a reading retreat or a couple's weekend, and there are plenty of ways to stay entertained nearby or at home; a few classic board games sit on a shelf in the living room, and out back, you can grill meals, sit around the table with a deck of cards, or make s'mores by the campfire. |
