In Lofoten, Norway, a Table Is Set Between Peaks and Fjords

By Arati Menon

In a wind-whipped corner of Sørvågen, a village in the southwestern reaches of the archipelago, a cluster of mustard-colored cabins on stilts juts out into the sea. Once home to a cod factory, these buildings have been transformed into Holmen Lofoten, a unique culinary destination and hotel that has welcomed food lovers and adventurers from around the world since 2007.

During my four-day stay, Holmen would play host to Kitchen at the Edge of the World, an extraordinary culinary adventure launched in 2018 that welcomes acclaimed chefs into its kitchen four times a year and brings guests together around the table and out into the surrounding wild.

What the Traveler Editors are Loving

Rebecca Misner

The beauty of a trip to a place like Kauai, even when you're planning on staying at a luxe property like 1Hotel Hanalei Bay where I stayed, is that you can keep things pretty casual at all times. For me, this meant chic but not fussy given that my days were spent going between the pool and beach (and the hotel's very excellent spa).

I'm a big believer in investing in a few well-made, hardworking items that I'll get a lot of use out of—like Dita's oversized Day Tripper sunglasses (the lenses are such good quality and I love that they come in Navy, so elegant) and an Eres swimsuit. Their suits last forever, and the strapless one-piece has gripper tape so you can actually swim in it, plus it doubles as a cute top if you throw shorts or a skirt on over. For any warm-weather travels, I always throw in a pair of flip-flops. Rainbows are my go-tos, and the ones with the thinner straps give them a slightly more elevated look (so much more comfortable than most sandals, and you can get them wet). And, of course, a solid tinted sunblock that doesn't give ghost face, that stays on in the water, and is, crucially, reef safe—Colorescience makes a great one.
