As someone who travels a lot for work, I would give anything to swap a flight for a train—even if that means spending eight hours on the rails.
Although I am a big fan of modern high-speed routes, the most romantic way to see the continent is certainly aboard one of Belmond's gorgeous luxury trains, which travel to destinations such as the British countryside, the Amalfi Coast, and the Scottish Highlands.
But in 2027, my bucket-list Belmond journey is a glamorous new addition to its already impressive collection of itineraries: the French Riviera.

Horseshoe-shaped Dog’s Bay is one of the loveliest beaches in Connemara (perhaps even in Ireland), with more than a mile of white sand, given its pearlescent color from finely ground seashells. Beloved of hardy sea swimmers and dog walkers, it’s a few minutes’ drive from the fishing village of Roundstone, which buzzes with second-home-owners during the summer months but is gloriously deserted when I visited on a beautifully clear January weekend.
I was there to check out this excellent glass villa, a modernist reimagining of a traditional cottage in a knockout setting with an elemental landscape. The surrounding patchwork of tiny fields was crisscrossed with stone walls covered in moss that looked as soft as velvet. Spindly trees, bare in winter, guarded the boundaries like Giacometti sculptures. The views were what gave this place its wow factor; the south-facing house catches both the sunrise and sunset, and during my stay, the early-morning sky was streaked with candyfloss clouds. The end of the day blazed orange, the distant shapes of the Aran islands blurring on the horizon. —Grainne McBride, contributing writer
